The Gegenes are a mythical tribe of fierce and lawless giants with six arms. They live on Bear Mountain, on an island in the Propontis near mainland Phrygia. They are the children of Gaia, the Greek earth goddess, and battled with the Argonaut. Gegenes is also the genus name of four moth species known as “pygmy skippers” or “hottentots.”
