Some interesting facts:

  • Archeologists have found the oldest known human ancestors in Ethiopia, including Ardipithecus ramidus kadabba (5.8–5.2 million years old) and Australopithecus anamensis (4.2 million years old).
  • Ethiopia is sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest state
  • The Solomonic dynasty claims descent from King Menelik I, traditionally believed to have been the son of the queen of Sheba and King Solomon
  • Ethiopians were Jewish, before Coptic Christianity was brought in 341 CE. Some pockets of Jews still remain.
  • After the Conference of Berlin, Ethiopia was the only African-ruled African country to remain independent. (Liberia technically did as well, but it was a protectorate of the United States.)
