I cannot answer the first without resorting to book length, so I’m going to simply state that I, as an American, appreciate the fact that English is now the lingua franca of the world. I can thank the British for that, if nothing else.
At the time, it appeared that the US had to get involved in Vietnam. However, I see no reason why it should not have simply provided aid to the French, or some other puppet regime, as we did in so many other countries (Nicaragua being a prime example).
