Falconry!
Some interesting facts about the “sport” of using falcons to catch food
- Falconry began in China around 2000 BC
- It slowly spread westwards. It is recorded in England at 860 AD
- Falcons are a type of hawk. True falcons are long-winged.
- After the Norman Conquest, only noblemen were allowed to use falcons to hunt. Peasants could be hanged if caught using falcons. However, they were permitted to use short-winged hawks.
- The best birds came from Scandinavia, and the best of the best from Norway
- Since birds died, flew away, or were lost frequently, there was a constant demand for hawks. People frequently brought captured ones to court for rewards.
- The term codger comes from cadge, the frames used to transport falcons
