Anonymous asked: I think the reason why people are so willing to accept America as a failure (including a lot of American's) is that it's often used as a scapegoat country where even the citizens feel obligated to apologize for mistakes that may not even be fully theirs.

This is fair. And I agree, many Americans are used to being embarrassed by or for their countrymen. But at the end of the day, it is pretty much impossible to hate one’s own culture. So while Americans may be embarrassed by other Americans, they always do so thinking they are somehow superior. For example, Yankees will scoff at the ignorance or racism of the south, believing themselves to be immune to those flaws.
