That rather impressive house in the background is Adolph Sutro’s seven-story Victorian chateau, or castle if we’re not being fancy. It was built in 1896, and quickly became a popular weekend destination with San Franciscans. It survived the 1906 earthquake, only to burn down in 1907. The place was rebuilt as a much less impressive restaurant.
