fun facts, quotes, and pictures from history
The First Barbary War was the very first war between the United States and the Barbary States. Didn’t know there was one war, let alone more than that? Well, it happened. The Barbary States were where modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya are today. They were run by king-like rulers, whose form of income was piracy. And some of the ships they took were American. Understandably, the Americans were not too happy about that. Diplomacy failed, and Tripoli declared war on August 1, 1801. The war lasted till 1805, and included a combined American and mercenary capture of a Barbary city.
