In English, to “decimate” means to completely destroy. The word comes from the Latin decimare, which evolved from the practice of killing every tenth Roman soldier if the army tried to mutiny or was generally cowardly. The units were divided into groups of ten, and everyone drew lots to determine who would die. The nine not chosen had to kill the tenth, often with clubs or stoning.
