Why is it called “Venezuela”?

It actually means “Little Venice”, from Italian Venezuola, the diminutive of Venezia (Italian for “Venice”). Why Venice? Because the native stilt-houses built on Lake Maracaibo reminded the explorers Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci of buildings in Venice, built on silts to sit on the canals.
