Pears have been domesticated for a long time. The first record of them is from documents about Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat about 5000 years ago who quit his day job to follow his passion for grafting pears to other fruits, like peaches, almonds, persimmons, and apples, as a commercial venture. Basically, he was a mad scientist. And thanks to his weird obsession with pears, we have the “mother” of most of today’s pear varieties.
